How Too Much Teamwork Hurts Productivity
How Too Much Teamwork Hurts Productivity If teamwork is good, more teamwork must be better, right? That might sound logical, but itâs actually not the case. In fact, new evidence suggests that worker productivity is suffering from an over-reliance on teamwork. And if youâre a better team player, youâre actually at greater risk. Think about it: How many times have you been pulled away from a project to attend a meeting or address a group email? If the answer is âtoo many,â youâre not alone. And the downside is that workers arenât being left with enough time to do their own work. Workers now spend 50% more time at work on collaborative activities than they did a generation ago, according to the Harvard Business Review. Women are especially likely to be given more team-based work and pigeonholed into roles as collaborators, even if thatâs not their natural work style, the article says. But while earning a reputation as a team player might get you kudos from the boss, it will also earn you some less desirable outcomes, like increasing requests for help or requests for your advice or input. Typically, between 20% and 35% of the constructive value added by collaboration at work is contributed by 5% or less of the workforce, the HBR article says. So if youâre one of that relative handful of employees, the demands on your time and mental energy could become overwhelming. Part of the problem is that an emphasis on teamwork can encourage people to ask for help on assignments or projects they really should be able to tackle on their own. âAn exchange that might have taken five minutes or less turns into a 30-minute calendar invite that strains personal resources on both sides of the request,â the article says. What can you do about it? HBR recommends that workers learn to filter and prioritize requests, politely decline some, and direct people to other resources that might suit their needs better. It also suggests some shifts in organizational culture. In one case, âmanagers at Dropbox eliminated all recurring meetings for a two-week period. That forced employees to reassess the necessity of those gatherings and, after the hiatus, helped them become more vigilant about their calendars,â the story notes. Future company meetings were shorter and more productive.

4 Ways To Get Experience In The Legal Field - Work It Daily
4 Ways To Get Experience In The Legal Field - Work It Daily If you canât get enough of courtroom dramas and you are fascinated by the legal field, working in a law office may be your ideal employment scenario. But if you are just starting out, getting your foot in the door can be challenging. Maybe youâve searched the classified ads only to discover zero opportunities in the law field. Understand, however, that some law offices do not heavily advertised available positions. Don't let this discourage you. How To Get Experience In The Legal Field There are different ways to gain experience in the law field: 1. Legal Secretary Maybe you havenât taken legal courses in college, but you have extensive administrative experience. You might be a good candidate for a legal secretary. Some law firms hire legal secretaries with no experience - as long as they are familiar with computer software and can handle other administrative tasks. This is a great opportunity to learn how a law office works, and there is also the opportunity to assist attorneyâs with their cases. Beginning your career as a legal secretary can be a stepping stone to becoming a paralegal - and possibly a lawyer in the future. 2. Internship Prior to graduating from a legal program in college, contact various law offices in your local area and apply as an intern. Internships are an excellent way to gain experience in the law field, and depending on how well you preform, the law firm may offer you a position upon graduation. For example if you are interested in becoming a personal injury lawyer, look at internships with firms in that niche, like Joel H. Schwartz, P.C. Even if the firm cannot offer you a position, the fact that youâve gained real experience can give you an edge in a competitive job market. You can include this internship on your resume and obtain a professional reference. Many successful law firms gladly accept applications for internships. For information on internships, talk with your college adviser or contact local law firms directly. 3. Temp Agency Schedule an appointment with a legal temp agency and complete an application. These agencies can help if you have some legal knowledge. As a temp, you work with a law firm on a temporary basis. There may be assignments for receptionists, legal secretaries, paralegals and legal clerks. Some temp assignments are long-term, and if you do a good job, the law firm may offer you a part time or full time position. 4. Volunteer Contact your local legal clinic or legal aid office and inquire about volunteering. These offices handle a lot of cases, and they often need help with overflow work. You can work as a law clerk, which is a person who completes administrative work around the office, or perhaps help with research. This can provide you with quality legal experience, which can open the door to future opportunities in the law field. The law field encompasses so much, and you donât have to be a lawyer to have a fulfilling career in this area. Legal positions are perfect if you enjoy the legal field, but donât have the time or resources to attend law school. Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

3 Surprising Things I Learned By Becoming A Female Breadwinner
3 Surprising Things I Learned By Becoming A Female Breadwinner Growing up, I welches always taught that the man in the household was the breadwinner. His role was to make the money and make the key financial decisions. My parents would have loved nothing more for me than to get married and have a husband do those things for me.Sounds old school now, doesnt it? This wasnt that long ago either. I actually had the same expectations of myself until I hit my early 20s. But then, I entered the workforce and things changed. I found new drive and focus in myself I never knew existed. This drive pushed me to conquer my career with a competitive spirit with monetary goals in mind. I began to make money. Good money. Aside of my career aspirations, I eventually did marry, and became the breadwinner, which was counterintuitive to how I was raised. This created a different dynamic that no one could have prepared me for. Here are the three most surprising things Ive learned as a female breadwinner1. The Power StruggleMaking more money than my husband presented a power struggle that surprised me. Although I was out earning him, he wanted to make all of the financial decisions on ur behalf. If we spent money on home upgrades, vacations or investments, he wanted to have control. When I spoke up about how I thought we should spend money, my voice was typically overlooked, or he found a reason that my ideas were not good ones. This made me feel unsettled and degraded, which created a rift in our relationship. Despite our modern earning situation, he wanted to keep traditional roles. The struggle was real and was a challenge to resolve. It forced us to find better ways to communicate about money and re-define ourselves.2.The StressEven though I was traveling, conducting meetings, managing people and bringing in the dough, I was still expected to keep the household running. What surprised me is that this added a whole different level of stress. I didnt see this coming. I tried to find a way to understand this stress, and was validated when I read an article published in FACT TANK (March 2015) Women continue to bear a heavier burden when it comes to balancing work and family, despite progress in recent decades to bring about gender equality in the workplace. When I read this, I realized I wasnt alone.3.The BeautyI just presented some of the surprising challenges that came my way, but I do have to mention the surprise in the beauty of being the breadwinner. Self -sufficiency. Regardless of the influence of my parents expectations early in my life, I surprised myself by becoming financially self -sufficient. I can take care of myself, my family and save money for the future. This provides a level of freedom and confidence, and I will most certainly instill these qualities in my daughter.Being a female breadwinner presents positives and challenges. Despite making money, the common theme here is that we are still conflicted by traditional roles. Women are advancing i n their careers, and I expect this trend to continue. Now, it is all about accepting this shift and incorporating it into the family unit. We can do it, change it and teach it.--Holly Caplan is an award-winning manager and author of Surviving the Dick Clique A Girls Guide to Surviving the Male Dominated Corporate World. Expert Interview Lawyer Jane Woodcock Shares Her Unlikely Career Path
Expert Interview Lawyer Jane Woodcock Shares Her Unlikely Career Path Ed. Note Jane Woodcock is head of the personal injury department at the U.K.-based law firm Hudgell Solicitors. Here, she speaks to Simon Wilson, a senior solicitor at the firm, about the unlikely path that lead to her law career. If youre interested in a career in law, youll definitely want to see what Woodcock has to say. Our American readers should also bedrngnise that, given that the education system herediffers from the system in the U.K., they cant follow the letter of Woodcocks advice but the more important thing here is thespirit of the advice, and that should be valuable to everyone, no matter their career or their geographical location.Simon WilsonWhat made you decide against going through university? Do you regret not going to university? What are the benefits of not going to university?Jane WoodcockI welches a headst rong 16-year-old when I left school after O levels and dont think I even considered going to university. Regrets possibly in terms of widening horizons, but none in terms of where my career path has led me since. I doubt that I could have achieved more than I have even had I attended university. The benefit of not going to university and instead studying for legal executive examinations while in employment in legal practice is that the knowledge gained on a practical level from working files and from working with and being mentored by experienced staff is invaluable and something that simply cannot be achieved through the university route.SWWhat alternative route did you take to get into law?JWAs I say, I studied for the Institute of Legal Executives examinations, qualifying pretty quickly as an associate and then going on to take the fellowship examinations, which at the time were said to be equivalent to degree standard examinations, and I presume still are. I got a distinction or two and because I was too young to be made a fellow. There was a qualifying employment period of five years. I think had to wait about 18 months to get the formal title.SWWhat subjects did you take at school? Did these help you towards a role in law?JWI attended a grammar school. Standard maths, English, and science-based subjects, history and geography, and we had Latin classes although I cant pretend they have particularly shaped my life since. If anything, I probably excelled in English and history, which probably had a bearing. Being blessed with something of a photographic memory also helped a bit.Jane WoodcockSWHave you had any on-the-job training? If so, what did it involve and how has it prepared you for your role?JWAs above, I had on-the-job-training from the beginning and eventually got the hang of it well enough to train other people.SWWhat are the biggest challenges that you have faced in your career so far?JWDifficult question. I have been qualified for more than30 ye ars now At the beginning, the biggest challenge was to gain acceptance, as a female, into the world of civil litigation, which was very much a male domain. From memory, there were about 33 separate firms practicing in Hull at the time, and only myself and one other female working in the civil litigation field at anything like a fee-earner level. Times have changed very considerably since then, and women may well now outweigh men in this field. The challenge was therefore to gain the acknowledgement and respect of not only fellow litigators, but also counsel and judges which I think I did.SWWhere do you see yourself in five years time?JWRetired and sitting in the sunSWDo you have any role models or mentors who have inspired your career choices so far?JWI qualified as a fellow while working for a firm where I did defense work (i.e., the opposite of what I do now). I ended up staying for 13 years. I worked with/for a guy called John Bryers. Without exaggeration, I would not be where I am now without the guidance this man gave me. Without exaggeration, he is probably the kindest and most genuine person I have ever met.So, I got lucky, and in a sense, luck does play a part in this type of career being in the right place at the right time, someone spotting your talent, landing that one case that develops into something that makes legal precedent.SWWhat key skills do you think you need for your role?JWAn eye for detail, good memory, good knowledge and understanding of the law, patience, the ability tobea good listener and good communicator, common sense, a sense of humor, and the ability to withstand stress very significant stress at times and be prepared to lose sleep in the literal sense.Jane WoodcockSWWhat advice would you give someone aspiring to a career in law who has not been to university and is not planning to do so?JWThink about getting work placement in a firm. Think about taking even a very junior role in a firm to get a foot in the door. Many legal ex ecutives have started their careers in secretarial roles or similar. Also, just to put matters into perspective, there is very little indeed that a fellow of the Institute cannot do which a solicitor can including being a partner in a firm and having a right of audience in the higher courts.
